Macau: 1Q08 Retail Sales +46% to $569M

Macau's retail sales for the first quarter of 2008 were estimated at $569 million, up 46 percent from the same period in 2007.

Acording to figures released by its Statistics and Census Service (DSEC,) the former Portuguese colony saw an increase in food, clothing and automobiles, but notably increased its pace of clock, watch and jewelry sales as well.

The DSEC said that while 65 percent of retailers saw sales volume increase or remain stable, some 35 percent reported a decrease. Projections for the second quarter of 2008 remain optimistic, with some 72 percent expecting sales volumes to increase or remain stable.
